Five Important Life Lessons I've Learned Over the Years

There are lessons that we all pick up along the way as we go on in life. Many of my lessons came when I least expected them to and it took some time for me to realize I had actually learned anything valuable. Sometimes it took a repetition of a similar situation for me to realize I'd learned any valuable lesson, but over time, some of these lessons have helped me avoid mistakes, and even handle situations better.

1.) Time will heal all wounds but it will not erase any scars: That's the sad truth many of us are unwilling to accept- the fact that in spite of healing, our scars remain. We believe having scars may be an unfortunate experience, hence we attempt to act like our scars are not there. I have come to realize the beauty in my scars- scars are reminders of lessons, reminders that help me avoid taking the same steps that led to an unfortunate situation in the first place. For some of us, our scars are mental, while others deal with emotional scars. The idea is to ensure you remember the lessons learned from an unfortunate experience, not to bury yourself beneath the weight of your scars.

2.) You can't hate yourself for the choices of others: This is a truth all of us must come to terms with! So often, we end up heartbroken, and tend to believe there is something inexplicably wrong with us based on a  choice someone else made! You cannot and should not detest yourself simply because someone else failed to see how awesome you are. You should not hate yourself for the many disappointments and betrayals carried out by the other people in your life. You are awesome the way you are, and if a person is meant to be a part of your life forever, he or she will always find a way to stay.

3.) Growth comes from discomfort: The comfort zone is the worst zone you can be if you intend to grow in life. There is nothing that happens in the comfort zone. If anything at all, it gives room to mediocrity! If you intend to grow in life, you must be willing to leave your comfort zone and leap into the unknown. This is the only way you will develop the wisdom of a sage, and definitely the only way you will experience personal growth as an individual. It is important that we grow as individuals, constantly stretching our minds to understand others better and of course understand the dynamics of the world around us. This in itself forms the foundation for success.

4.) You should be ready for disappointment: Always have a plan B. Do not rely on anyone fully. Only God is that reliable. For every plan, have a fail-safe alternative. It is the best way to go through life. Of course, plan B may sometimes evade you, but as much as you can, try to have it in place.

5.) Seize every opportunity: By all means do! A line from Westlife's "flying without wings" say "you have to fight for every dream, 'cause who should know which one you let go of, will make you complete". This is a fact I have learned. Sometimes we fail to let life flow through us because we are determined to live life by the design we have created for ourselves. However the truth remains that we must be willing to seize every opportunity, we do not know which will make us complete. In other words, we must be willing to live life by a combination of default and design- to live by our design, but readily adjust to the default situations.
